Fish of the Day

Date: Tue 3/8/2022 8:00 AM

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today's fish is the swordfish! Suggested by Johnny.

The swordfish is an amazing animal, recognized and named after the long bill extending from the top lip. Looking quite a bit like a sword as it stretches out. They belong to the family Xiphias gladius and in some countries are called "broadbills''. Swordfish reach about as large as the bluefin tuna, reaching 3 meters as well, with the largest recorded swordfish being almost 15 feet in length.

The swordfish is highly migratory, and can be found in temperate to tropical oceans all around the world. They can also be found all over the Epipelagic and upper Mesopelagic zones of the ocean (known as the sunlight and twilight zones respectively). They live a nomadic and lazy life. Spending time around the surface of the water, where they tend to jump about. A scene regularly described as majestic. They're known during the day to spend time underwater hunting, and their nights at the surface.

In times of the past it is shown that their ancestors used to have a beak similar to the one they possess along the lower lip as well.

I hope everyone has a good Tuesday!
